booking through thursdayThis week’s question is:

What is the saddest book you have read recently?

I do not have to think about this one.  My saddest read was The Road by Cormac McCarthy. I am still recovering from this book. I finished it a couple of weeks ago and am still trying to think of how I want to word my review.

What has been your tearful read recently? Head on over to Booking Through Thursday to share your choice and to check out others thoughts.

My teenage daughter caught the movie trailer for this one awhile back and asked me if I knew the book. Of course I’d heard a lot about the book but haven’t actually read it (yet). The movie looks to be stunning, do you think you’ll go see it?

I am curious about the movie. I mean it has Viggo Mortensen!!! I hope it does the book justice. The trailer is great but I am not sure it is what I have pictured when I read the book.

I have just read the amazon reviews/descriptions. This book sounds like it is seeped in a tremendous amount of emotion. A lot of depth.?. I think I am going to add this book to my list.

    Here is my BTT.

Highly recommend it. But not a light read that is for sure.

I’ve never read The Road or anything by Cormac McCarthy. I’m interested though, I just listened to an interview with Chip Kidd, the guy who designed the cover of The Road, and it was a very interesting interview on the process and how authors react to book covers.

Here’s the link if you are interested: http://minnesota.publicradio.org/display/web/2009/09/16/midmorning2/

This is the first book by the author that I have read. Thanks for the interview link.
I don’t know if I would want to deal with authors and everyone else if I were to design a cover.

The Road is really sad, and has a real sense of isolation. Good pick!

Such isolation. That is what has stuck with me.

The Road is sad yet shows hope at the end. And yes it is difficult to review.

I wasn’t a big fan of this book, but the movie sure looks frightening!

    Here’s my BTT.

      The movie does look scary!!!

I have heard so much about how grim The Road is. I’ve been avoiding to read itven though I have a copy.

It took me a while to read it for the same reason.

Hmm I think I’d have to find my brain first. I did cry during the parts when Zsadist’s past was revealed in the Brother Of The Dagger series. Nothing really comes to mind.

That is because you have so much other stuff going on you don’t have time to cry. :-)

    Very sad read!

Can’t remember the last sad book I read…was probably something by Jodi Picoult, as she usually makes me tear up. Haven’t read anything by Cormac McCarthy, so will take a look as sometimes you’re just in the mood for a sad read.

Picoult does have that effect on people. If the sad mood strikes you, this one will live up to the mood.

My recent sad was also The Road. What a tear jerker!

  12. September 26, 2009 at 6:18 am | #21

For sure The Road is very sad-not sure I want to see the movie-to me this book is kind of like Mad Max meets Hemingway-also I was intrigued by the author’s repeated reference to squid ink which is used as an additive in cooking in a number of food cultures-to me this gave the reference a different meaning than the author no doubt intended. Just a small quibble. The book was exciting and kept my attention-I read it on a plane ride and it was a good book for that for me-thanks for sharing your thoughts on it with us.

Hmm, i’ve read Angela’s Ashes by Frank McCourt recently… couldn’t say that it was a sad one (optimism and lust for survival is radiating from that book despite of the things witten in it), but the parts where his baby sister and little brothers die almost made me cry. There’s no justice in Earth when little innocent creatures have to go! :(

I havent read this one yet but own it. I was trying hard to think of how I could answer that question as well… Pope Joan made me cry
